# Gameplay

Inside the MetaSpace universe, you can battle other players, explore immersive worlds, and improvise how you interact with the environment. In the story mode, you play as Todd, the protagonist. In the arenas, you can play as Todd as well as the other characters you bought from the marketplace. Along with shootables, melees, and vehicles, all acquired characters also live in your wallet as NFTs. The core gameplay involves combating enemies, collecting minerals, repairing equipment, and ultimately finding a way out and going home. The MetaSpace game is split into missions, arenas, and an Open World.

### Missions

Missions are played in a third-person perspective (TPP) and follow a story mode. There are four training missions before the Open World. You need to finish all the tasks inside a mission to complete it, and then go to the next mission through a portal. Completing missions earns you experience points (XP). The storyline in MetaSpace is told through game missions, including Open World missions. Missions are where you complete specific tasks, collect resources, fight enemies, and progress the main story.

You can replay any mission completed with fewer than 5 stars to level up and earn a 5-star rating. However, XP-based rewards per mission are capped. Hence, no extra XP from replays. However, you can always revisit missions to try out new strategies. Some missions are short and quick, while others are long and full of choices. Missions also unlock new areas, weapons, and story events. The game gives you freedom to choose the order of some side tasks, but the main path always moves forward.

### Arenas

Arenas, on the other hand, are played from a first-person shooter (FPS) view. Completing arenas also earns you XP. Each mission before the Open World is followed by an arena. You can use the portals from one mission to another only after you win the subsequent arena. For example, you have to complete the First Mission and win the First Arena, to move on to the Second Mission**.** Arenas are intense deathmatch battles where you fight other players or AI opponents in a dynamic environment. Winning arenas earns you huge XP rewards and sometimes other items.

### Private Arena

To play MetaSpace with your friends, you can jump any time into the private arena mode. It is a private multiplayer FPS deathmatch mode that also gives you a glimpse into the Open World. All MetaSpace Esports competitions and community events, including game nights, are conducted in Private Arena mode. You can invite friends, set custom rules, practice new weapons, or just have fun without worrying about the main story. It is the perfect place to warm up before big tournaments or test new loadouts.

### Open World

Once you complete the first four missions and win the four arenas, the Open World unlocks for you. However, to play the Open World, you need to get whitelisted, which requires you to have at least 25,000 XP in your account. The Open World contains a rich storyline, multiple missions, and endless options for improvisation. You can freely explore the huge map, accept side quests, build your base, hunt rare resources, join player events, or just drive around in your vehicle NFTs. The Open World feels quite real, thanks to other players, random events, weather changes, and day-night cycles. Part of the Open World is in public beta and the full experience will be live soon.

### Story Mode

The story mode on MetaSpace follows the protagonist, Todd, a rebel soldier from Earth, who is ambushed in space during an escape mission. Todd crashes into a scrapyard planet and walks away from the explosion with serious memory loss. He explores the unknown planet in hopes of finding the way back home. In the process, he makes allies, fights enemies, and does jobs. He eventually finds purpose in his existence by fighting for the people of the Terminus valley from the exploitation of the tyrant Metalord. The story is full of plot twists, surprises, betrayals, and revelations that keep you hooked from the very first minute. The biggest story arc is in the Open World, told across four phases.

In Phase 1, you arrive on a barren planet. After fighting waves of enemy mobs, you unlock Todd Base and discover three portals there. Portal 1 leads to the Marketplace and is already open. In Phase 2, you go to the Marketplace, complete mini-missions, and meet some old allies. Phase 3 takes you into the toxic environment called Terminus, where the dwellers live in poverty, while the Genesis government loots its resources. You fight along with other rebels to redeem the freedom of the people of Terminus. Phase 4 is the most elaborate among all phases. Here, you await a series of plot twists and a succession of battles and struggles to free the people of Genesis from the propaganda of the tyrant Metalord.

### Rewards and Tokens

When a gamer completes missions by performing in-game tasks, they are rewarded with experience points (XP). You need to pay in XP to play arenas, and winning them earns you back XPs manifold. Players can also earn XP from daily logins, daily spins, and community rewards. Names of players with the most in-game XP will be shown on the in-game leaderboard. XP can be converted into $LORD, MetaSpace's earnings token. All in-game purchases are conducted exclusively in $MLD, the platform's in-game currency and native token, which also functions as the ecosystem governance token.

You can read more about tokens in the Economy section [here](/whitepaper/marketplace.md).
